According to theosophical and esoteric teachings, the Akashic Records are a cosmic storehouse of information, accessible on a spiritual level.
During this type of reading when you ask a question, your guides can look up the answer in your personal encyclopedia and shuffle the cards to directly answer you. This way you are hearing it directly from them, and I am just the interpreter.
During the session I can hear a person's guides that oversee their Akashic Records. (This is also known as clairaudience). The commentary of the guides while reading a person's tarot cards can result in very direct, and sometimes very blunt answers.
