I have had the pleasure of working with many individuals on the autism spectrum with wonderful success.*
Some on the autism spectrum describe a profound sense of energetic detachment from their bodies—a feeling of being physically present yet not fully connected. This experience often stems from challenges with interoception, the internal sense that helps us perceive bodily signals like hunger, fatigue, or emotional states. For autistic individuals, interoceptive signals can be muted, confusing, or overwhelming, leading to difficulties in recognizing and responding to the body's needs. This disconnection can manifest as emotional numbness, physical discomfort, or a sense of dissociation, where one feels disconnected from their own body .Neurodivergent Insights+1Irfan Ali | Psychotherapy+1
The constant sensory overload and social demands faced by autistic individuals can exacerbate this disconnection. Over time, the nervous system may become dysregulated, oscillating between states of hyperarousal (anxiety, overstimulation) and hypoarousal (shutdown, numbness). This dysregulation can lead to a chronic state of stress, making it challenging to feel grounded or in control .
Reconnecting with one's body and energy involves practices that enhance interoceptive awareness and nervous system regulation. .Autism Learning Lab
By working to reconnect the energetic connection of the body and energy within the person, it allows them to feel more in control and connected.
